How to set up welcome prompts

Show up to four tappable questions when someone opens your DMs for the first time, and answer them with a saved DM — Instagram's conversation starters.

When someone opens your DM thread for the first time, Instagram can show them tappable questions — prices, hours, delivery. HyperDM calls the automation Conversation starters; the form calls the trigger Someone opens your DMs (welcome). A tap sends your saved DM.

Before you start

  • Instagram is connected — Connect Instagram.
  • You are an owner, admin or agent on the workspace.
  • Instagram allows 4 prompts of 80 characters each, shared across all your conversation-starter automations. A second automation's prompts count against the same four.

Build it

  1. Go to Automations and click the Conversation starters starter card, or New automationSomeone opens your DMs (welcome).
  2. Type the first prompt, e.g. What sizes do you carry?. Click + Add another prompt for more, up to four in total.
  3. Under Send this DM, write the reply. Tapping any prompt in this automation sends this one DM. To give different questions different answers, build separate conversation-starter automations with one prompt each.
  4. Name it and click Set live.

Setting it live pushes the prompts to Instagram. If Instagram refuses some of them, the form says so on that action — which prompts it took and which it did not — rather than showing a green badge over prompts that never arrived.

Test it on Instagram

Open your DM thread from an Instagram account that has never messaged you. The prompts appear before the first message. Tap one: the DM lands in that account's inbox and in your Inbox in HyperDM.

Conversation starters only appear the first time a thread is opened, so an account you have already talked to will not see them.

After it is live

  • Tap counts are tracked per prompt and survive editing.
  • Instagram is told about your prompts whenever you save, set live, pause, delete or restore the automation. If it refuses to remove them on pause or delete, they may still show in your DM opener and do nothing when tapped — re-save the automation to push the set again.
  • If Settings → Channels shows Profile drift, click Re-sync to push your prompts back.

Common problems

Instagram refused a prompt. Reword it — shorter, plainer — and save again.

The prompts do not show for me. You have already messaged the account. Test from an account that never has.

I want a fifth prompt. Instagram's limit is four across all your conversation-starter automations. Retire one to add another.

The persistent menu that shows in every thread is a different feature — Set up the Instagram main menu.
