ManyChat's free plan ends at 25 active contacts a month, and most people discover that number the week their first comment-to-DM post works. Twenty-five people trigger the automation, the twenty-sixth does not get the link, and the search for a free ManyChat alternative begins the same afternoon. The good news is that the free tiers of the other Instagram DM tools are mostly larger than ManyChat's; the catch is that every one of them caps something different. One counts DMs, one counts contacts, one counts posts, one counts conversations, and the cap you hit depends on the shape of your account, not on which tool is “best”.
This guide lists seven free options for Instagram, states each cap exactly as the vendor's own pricing page did on 2 September 2026, and ends with the short list of cheap paid tiers for the moment free stops being enough. By the end you will know which free plan your account will outgrow last.
What ManyChat's free plan actually includes
Start with the baseline, so every alternative is compared against the real thing rather than a memory of it. ManyChat's free plan, per its pricing page, includes 25 active contacts a month, any two channels, up to four active automations, one user, a basic unified inbox, self-serve support and ManyChat branding on your messages. No card is needed.
An active contact is a person you exchange messages with in a month, counted once however many messages pass. That is the detail that makes 25 feel small: it is not 25 messages, it is 25 people, and a single Reel can burn through it in an hour. Paid tiers start at Essential, $17 a month or $14 on annual, for 250 contacts, and then bill per additional contact beyond the allowance. Our breakdown of per-contact billing covers why that unit punishes growth; this piece is only about what you can run for nothing instead.
How to read a free tier before you commit to one
Three questions decide whether a free plan will hold for you.
- What is the unit of the cap? Contacts run out with reach. DMs run out with sends. Posts run out with publishing cadence. Conversations run out with real exchanges. Match the unit to what your account does most.
- What does free cost you that is not money? A watermark, a one-post limit, a missing feature you will want in week two.
- Is the ceiling a wall or a ramp? Some free plans stop cold; others let you keep the setup and pay a small amount to raise the cap.
Every tool below runs on Meta's official Instagram messaging API, which is the minimum bar for anything that touches your DMs. If you are assembling an entirely zero-budget growth stack around it, a list of free SEO tools for beginners covers the search side with the same free-tier-first logic.
1. Instagram's own automated replies (free, no cap)
The alternative nobody sells you is built into the app. A professional account can set up frequently asked questions with automated responses in Instagram Direct, and Meta Business Suite adds an instant reply, an away message and a keyword-triggered comment-to-message at no cost, with no contact or DM cap at all.
What it caps instead is capability. Replies are fixed text, the same message to everyone, with no branching, no email capture, no catalog behind them and no handoff to a human with context. Meta Business Suite's comment automation limits how many keywords you can use and is set up from the desktop interface. If your DMs are “what's your rate” and “where do I book”, set this up first and you may never need the rest of the list. If the DM has to sell something, it is the floor, not the answer.
2. CreatorFlow (free: 500 DMs a month)
CreatorFlow's free plan is free for as long as you like: one Instagram account and 500 automated DMs a month, with comment-to-DM included. Pro is $15 a month, or $12 on annual, for two accounts and 5,000 DMs per workspace, with a 14-day trial that charges nothing.
For a switcher, 500 DMs is the number to compare with 25 contacts. Because the unit is a sent message rather than a person, a comment-to-DM post that reaches 300 people costs 300 DMs and leaves 200 for the rest of the month; on ManyChat's free plan the same post stops at 25 people. The pricing page does not mention AI replies, so this is a link-delivery and comment tool rather than a system that answers questions.
3. LinkDM (free: 1,000 DMs a month)
LinkDM's free plan covers one Instagram account and 1,000 DMs a month with post and Reel auto-replies, story automation and inbox starters. Comment auto-reply, branding removal and lead capture sit on Pro at $19 a month for three accounts and 25,000 DMs. AI replies are not mentioned on its pricing page.
A thousand DMs a month is the largest free allowance on this list for straightforward link delivery, and per-DM billing is honest about what you use. The limits are the same shape as CreatorFlow's: the free tier delivers a message; it does not hold a conversation, and public comment replies need the paid tier.
4. Inrō (free: 100 active contacts, with AI)
Inrō is the closest free match for someone who liked ManyChat's model and wants more of it. The free plan covers 100 active contacts a month, three active automations, three campaigns a month and 50 AI agent credits, with no card. Pro is €12.99 a month for 500 or more active contacts with AI replies included, and the price scales automatically as contacts grow.
Four times ManyChat's free contact allowance, the same unit, and a taste of AI replies at zero cost. The trade is that the unit is still a contact, so a viral week still eats the allowance, and the auto-scaling paid tier means your bill is not fixed in advance.
5. Chatfuel Light (free, limits not published)
Chatfuel's Light tier is free with no card and includes Instagram, Facebook and WhatsApp automations, contact management and a team inbox. AI features are reserved for the AI PRO plan at $49 a month. The pricing page says usage limits apply and points to a separate plan-limits page rather than stating them.
It is a genuine free ManyChat alternative from the other long-established flow-builder vendor, and the inbox on a free plan is unusual. The honest caveat is the one the page makes itself: check the limits page for the current contact or conversation cap before you build on it, because the number is not on the pricing page.
6. Linktree's Instagram auto-reply (free: one post, 1,000 DMs)
If you already use Linktree, its comment-to-DM feature is included on every plan. Free automates replies on one specific post or Reel with 1,000 DMs a month; Starter lifts that to 1,500; only Pro and Premium unlock “all posts” and “next post” triggers. Linktree's own pricing page states that prices vary by region, so read it directly.
The one-post limit is the cap that bites. Every new Reel needs its own setup, and there are no keyword replies, story triggers or AI. As a free way to deliver one link from one post it is fine; as an alternative to ManyChat's automations it is a fraction of one.
7. HyperDM (free: 50 conversations a month)
Ours, described the same way as the others. The free plan is 50 conversations a month on one Instagram channel, with no card and a “Powered by HyperDM” badge on replies. What the free plan includes is the same product as the paid tiers: an AI agent you brief in plain English that answers from your actual catalog, inventory and policies and hands off to you when it should, plus the full visual flow builder with comment, keyword and story-reply triggers, conditions, delays, data capture, tagging, and an AI step you can drop into any flow. Comment-to-DM, keyword replies and follow gates are on the free plan, not gated.
The unit is a conversation: one customer engaging one campaign, however many messages it takes, counted again only after five quiet days or in a new month. So a Reel that reaches 2,000 people and produces 40 real conversations costs 40. The honest limits: 50 is a real ceiling, Instagram is the only live channel, and the badge is the price of free. Paid plans start at Starter, $39 a month or $33 on annual, for 500 conversations, with a flat $0.05 per conversation past that; the pricing page lists the rest.
Anyone leaving ManyChat specifically should read the migration checklist before turning anything off; the order you move things in matters more than the tool you move to.

When free stops: the cheap tiers worth knowing
For most switchers the question is not “free forever” but “how little can I pay once free runs out”. The lowest entry prices on the list, monthly, as of 2 September 2026: InstantDM at $9.99 for flat-fee unlimited automation subject to Instagram's rate limits (trial only, no free plan), Inrō Pro at €12.99, CreatorFlow Pro at $15, ManyChat Essential at $17, and LinkDM Pro at $19. HyperDM Starter is $39.
Read the unit before the price, because a cheap tier with the wrong unit gets expensive first. Per-contact tiers add overage charges beyond the allowance; ManyChat's start at $0.10 per additional contact on Essential. Per-DM tiers only grow when you send more. A flat fee never grows. The hidden-fees checklist in a guide to comparing costs with an SEO pricing tool is a useful habit to carry over: find the line that scales, not the headline. Our ranking of ManyChat alternatives by reliability, pricing and support goes deeper on the paid tiers.
Choosing your free ManyChat alternative
The best free ManyChat alternative is the one whose cap your account hits last. Reach-heavy creators delivering a link should count DMs and start with LinkDM or CreatorFlow; anyone who wants ManyChat's model with a bigger free allowance should look at Inrō; anyone who already pays for Linktree gets one post's worth for nothing. If your DMs need to answer real questions from real products, and you would rather be counted by conversations than by contacts, start on HyperDM's free plan with your catalog connected and see how far 50 conversations go before you spend anything.
Run the automations. Let the AI close.
Comment-to-DM, keyword replies, follow gates — set up in minutes, then the AI answers from your real catalog. Free on one channel, 50 conversations a month, no card.
