Every Instagram automation tool free tier is free for a reason, and the reason is worth knowing before you build on one. Some are free because the vendor wants you to upgrade. Some are free because you're the one running the server. And one of the best options is free because Instagram itself ships it, which almost nobody mentions because nobody makes money telling you about it.
This list covers what each free tier genuinely includes, taken from the vendors' own documentation rather than their marketing. That includes ours, limits and all — a free tier you'll outgrow in a fortnight isn't a favour to anyone. Where a tool simply can't do the job at any price, that's said plainly too.
How to judge a free tier
Four questions separate the useful free tiers from the demos. Ask them in this order and the list mostly sorts itself:
- Can it actually touch Instagram DMs? Several popular automation tools cannot, on any plan, at any price.
- What's the unit of the cap — messages, tasks, contacts, conversations — and how fast will you hit it?
- What does free cost you in something other than money: a watermark, your weekends, a 15-minute delay?
- Is the ceiling a graceful upgrade or a wall you discover mid-launch?
1. Instagram's own built-in tools
The most-overlooked free option is the one already in the app. A professional account gets frequently asked questions on Instagram Direct with automated responses attached, and Instagram has been rolling out AI Auto Replies as a native feature. No third party, no API, no tokens.
Genuinely free, genuinely limited. It handles the predictable questions and nothing beyond them — there's no catalog behind it, no order lookup, no branching, no way to hand a conversation to a human with context. For a creator whose DMs are “where do I book” and “what's your rate,” this may honestly be the whole answer, and you should take it before paying anyone. For a store whose DMs decide sales, it's a starting point rather than a system.
Set it up first regardless of what else you buy. It costs an evening, it deflects the boring third of your inbox, and it gives you a clear read on which questions actually need something smarter — which is exactly the information you want before spending money on a tool.
2. n8n Community Edition (self-hosted)
The strongest free option for technical users, and it isn't close. n8n's Community Edition is free to self-host, and its Facebook Trigger node natively subscribes to Instagram messages and comments events. Sending has no dedicated node, so you call Meta's Send API through the Graph API or HTTP Request node. n8n also bills per workflow execution rather than per step, so complexity doesn't inflate the meter.
The price is paid elsewhere: you provide the server, the monitoring, the backups and the TLS certificate, and you own Meta's token lifecycle forever — long-lived tokens last 60 days and must be refreshed before expiry. Free in dollars, not in Sundays. If you already run n8n, that marginal cost is genuinely near zero and this is the right answer.
3. Make's free plan
Make's free plan includes 1,000 credits a month — “most actions consume 1 credit” — with a 15-minute minimum interval between runs. Its Instagram for Business app covers comments properly: “List post comments,” “Create a reply,” plus posting modules.
The catch is specific: there are no direct-message modules at all. Comment automation, yes. DMs mean creating your own Meta app and driving it through the HTTP module — at which point you're doing the DIY build inside Make rather than avoiding it. That 15-minute floor also matters more than it looks for anything time-sensitive.
4. Zapier's free plan
Included for completeness and to save you the afternoon: Zapier's free plan gives you 100 tasks a month, and its Instagram for Business integration has no DM triggers or actions on any plan. Its triggers are “New Media Posted in My Account” and “New Tagged Media”; its actions publish photos and videos.
So for Instagram DM automation specifically, Zapier's free tier isn't restrictive — it's the wrong shop. That's a scope decision rather than a shortcoming, and Zapier remains excellent for what happens after a conversation: pushing the lead to your CRM, logging the sale, notifying Slack.
5. ManyChat's free plan
ManyChat offers a free plan capped by contact count, and for a small creator account it does real work — this list would be dishonest without it. The thing to understand is the unit rather than the tier: per-contact billing counts the size of your audience, not the work done, so the free ceiling arrives on the back of a good campaign rather than a busy inbox. We've written out that arithmetic in why per-contact billing punishes growth.
6. HyperDM's free tier
Ours, described the same way as everyone else's. Free is 50 conversations a month on Instagram — the only DM channel we run today — with your Shopify catalog connected so the agent answers from your real products. No card. Every reply carries a “Powered by HyperDM” badge; that watermark is the price of free, and paid plans remove it.
The honest limits: 50 conversations is a real ceiling, not a soft one, and Instagram is the whole list — if you came here wanting your TikTok or WhatsApp DMs answered, we don't do that, and upgrading doesn't add a channel. It's built to be enough to find out whether the replies are actually good against your own catalog and your own customers — not to run a launch on. If your DMs are busier than that, you'll outgrow it, and that's the design.

Picking the right Instagram automation tool free of charge
Match the tool to the honest shape of your problem. If your DMs are a handful of predictable questions, use Instagram's built-in FAQs and spend the money elsewhere — that's the recommendation more often than the industry admits. If you're technical and already self-hosting, n8n's free edition is the most capable thing on this list. If you need comment automation without DMs, Make's free plan does it. If you want Zapier for Instagram DMs, you want a different tool.
And if the reply itself is the job — open-ended questions, a catalog that changes, sales riding on the answer — try ours free and let your real DMs settle it. 50 conversations a month on Instagram, badge on the replies, no card: start free. If the questions in your inbox are the kind a keyword can't catch, the comment-to-DM playbook is the pattern worth reading first.
Run the automations. Let the AI close.
Comment-to-DM, keyword replies, follow gates — set up in minutes, then the AI answers from your real catalog. Free on one channel, 50 conversations a month, no card.
