Best Instagram Auto DM Tools (2026), Ranked by What You Pay For

Ten tools, four billing units, every price from the vendor's own page. The unit decides your bill long before the features do.

By HyperDM

Young woman in a cream cardigan laughs at a long till receipt she holds up at a sunlit café counter, phone in her other hand.

Every Instagram auto DM tool does roughly the same thing on day one: someone comments a word on your Reel, a message with your link lands in their inbox. What separates them is what happens on day thirty, when the bill arrives, because each one counts something different. The best Instagram auto DM tool for a creator with a huge audience and a quiet inbox is a bad buy for a store with a small following and a busy one, and the reverse is also true.

This list sorts ten options by their billing unit first and their features second, with every price taken from the vendor's own pricing page on 2 September 2026. Instagram direct message automation is a small market with a lot of new entrants, so the prices will move; the units mostly will not. By the end you will know which unit fits your account, which tool charges by it, and what each one leaves out.

How to compare Instagram DM automation tools

Four questions sort this list faster than any feature grid, and they are the same four that decide which is the best Instagram auto DM tool for a specific account rather than in general.

  • What is the billing unit? Per active contact, per DM sent, per AI message, per conversation, or a flat fee. This decides whether a viral post costs you money.
  • Where does the free tier stop? A cap on contacts, on DMs, on posts, or on conversations. Each fails at a different moment.
  • Is the AI included or metered? Several tools sell the flow builder on one meter and the AI replies on another.
  • Is it on Meta's official messaging API? Every tool below is, which is the minimum bar. Instagram's own rules apply identically to all of them, including the 24-hour messaging window Meta gives an automation to reply before a human has to.

The order below groups tools by billing unit, from free to per-conversation. It is not a ranking of quality; a per-DM tool and a per-contact tool are answering different questions.

1. Instagram's own automated replies (free)

The cheapest Instagram automation tool is the one already in the app. A professional account can set up frequently asked questions with automated responses in Instagram Direct, and Meta Business Suite adds an instant reply, an away message and a keyword-triggered comment-to-message feature at no cost.

The limits are the reason the rest of this list exists. The replies are fixed text, one message to everyone who triggers it, with no branching, no catalog behind them, no email capture and no handoff to a human with context. Meta Business Suite's comment automation also caps how many keywords you can use and runs from the desktop interface. For a creator whose DMs are “where do I book” and “what's your rate”, this may be the whole answer, and you should set it up before paying anyone. For an account where the DM decides the sale, it is the baseline you are comparing everything else against.

2. InstantDM (flat fee)

InstantDM charges a flat fee with no contact or DM meter: Legend Pro at $9.99 a month, described on its pricing page as unlimited automation subject to Instagram's 750-per-hour limit, and Trendsetter at $24.99 a month. There is no free plan; both tiers start with a seven-day trial and no card. Comment-to-DM, a “DM for link” feature and AI comment replies are on both tiers.

A flat fee is the simplest unit on this list and the right one if your traffic is spiky: a Reel that does ten times your usual numbers costs the same as a quiet week. What you give up is depth. It is a link-delivery and comment-reply tool rather than a conversation system, so if you need the DM to qualify a lead, look up an order or answer from a catalog, you will outgrow it in a way the price never warns you about.

3. LinkDM (per DM sent)

LinkDM meters DMs, not people. The free plan covers one Instagram account and 1,000 DMs a month with post and Reel auto-replies and story automation. Pro is $19 a month for three accounts and 25,000 DMs, and adds comment auto-reply, branding removal and lead capture. Platinum+ is $99 a month for ten accounts and 300,000 DMs. Annual billing is $182 and $832 respectively. Its pricing page does not mention AI replies.

Per-DM billing is generous when your automations send one message per person, which is exactly what link delivery does. It is also honest in a way per-contact billing is not: a follower who triggers your automation three times in a month costs three DMs, not a “contact” that expires and renews. The trade is the same as InstantDM's. You are buying a very good delivery mechanism, not a system that talks back.

4. CreatorFlow (per DM, per workspace)

CreatorFlow's free plan is free indefinitely: one account and 500 automated DMs a month, with comment-to-DM included. Pro is $15 a month, or $12 on annual, for two accounts and 5,000 DMs per workspace; Growth is $30, or $24 annual, for five accounts, 10,000 DMs and five team seats. Both paid tiers carry a 14-day trial that charges nothing. As with LinkDM, AI replies are not mentioned on its pricing page.

The per-workspace framing matters if you run several accounts: the DM allowance is shared across the accounts in the workspace rather than issued per account. For a creator with one account and modest volume, the free tier's 500 DMs is enough to find out whether comment-to-DM moves anything for you before spending a cent, which is more than most tools on this list offer.

If the accounts you manage belong to clients rather than to you, the arithmetic changes again; the Instagram DM automation software buyer's guide walks through what an agency should be checking before any of these numbers.

5. Linktree's Instagram auto-reply (bundled with your bio link)

Linktree now ships comment-to-DM as a feature of the link-in-bio product. Every plan includes it, and the gating is by scope and volume: the free plan can automate replies on one specific post or Reel with 1,000 DMs a month, Starter raises that to 1,500, and only Pro (2,500 DMs) and Premium (unlimited) unlock “all posts” and “next post” triggers. Linktree's pricing page states that prices vary by region, so check it directly rather than trusting a number quoted elsewhere.

This is the option to consider if you already pay for Linktree and your entire automation need is “send my link when someone comments”. It is not a DM system, has no AI, and the one-post limit on free means every new Reel needs its own setup. The moment you want a keyword reply, a story trigger or a conversation, you are buying a second tool anyway.

6. ManyChat (per active contact)

ManyChat is the incumbent, and it bills by active contacts: a person counts once per month regardless of how many messages you exchange. The free plan covers 25 active contacts, two channels and four automations, with ManyChat branding. Essential is $17 a month, or $14 on annual, for 250 contacts. Pro is $39, or $29 annual, for 2,500 contacts and is the first tier with AI features included. Business is $99, or $69 annual, for 7,500 contacts; Advanced is $199, or $139 annual, for 25,000. Every paid tier then bills per additional contact beyond the allowance, from $0.10 each on Essential down to $0.004 on Advanced, with a 14-day trial on Essential and Pro.

The unit is the whole story. Per-contact billing counts the size of the audience that touched your automation, not the work done, so the month a Reel goes viral is the month your bill jumps, and it jumps whether or not those new contacts bought anything. For a business with a steady, known audience the tiers are predictable and the tooling is the deepest on this list. For a creator whose reach swings, the overage line is the number to read before the headline price. We have written a full ranking of ManyChat alternatives by reliability, pricing and support for anyone weighing a switch.

7. Inrō (per active contact, in euros)

Inrō uses the same unit as ManyChat with a smaller free plan and a lower entry price. Free is 100 active contacts a month, three automations, three campaigns and 50 AI agent credits, with no card. Pro is €12.99 a month for 500 or more active contacts, with the price scaling automatically as contacts grow and AI replies included; an annual plan at €1,249 a year covers 10,000 or more contacts. A managed tier starts at €200 a month.

The auto-scaling is the detail to understand: it means there is no hard ceiling, but also no fixed bill. If you like ManyChat's model and want AI included from the first paid tier, this is the closest match at a lower starting price. If you want to know your bill before the month starts, it is the wrong unit.

8. FlowGent (per message credit)

FlowGent separates flows from AI on two meters. Starter is $19 a month for unlimited flows and one agent with zero AI credits, so it is a flow builder only. Hobby at $49 adds 2,000 message credits and AI replies; Standard at $99 has 4,000 credits, five tools and three team members; Pro at $199 has 8,000 credits and three agents. Annual billing takes 20% off, and every tier starts with a seven-day trial. It runs on Instagram and WhatsApp.

Credits are the unit to watch. A message credit is consumed by the AI answering, so a busy inbox with long conversations burns through a tier faster than a contact count would suggest, and the cheapest tier does not include the feature most people come for. Read the credit allowance as the real price.

9. SetSmart (per AI message)

SetSmart is an AI setter for Instagram DMs rather than a flow builder: it reads a message, qualifies the lead and books a call. Its pricing page lists a Pro plan at $99 a month including 1,000 AI messages, usage-based pricing above that, and enterprise pricing on request. The seven-day trial requires a card.

This is the purest version of the AI-message unit. You are paying for replies the model writes, so the bill tracks conversation volume directly, and 1,000 messages is not many for an account where each lead exchanges ten. It suits a coach or a service business whose DMs are high-value and low-volume, and it is the wrong shape for a store answering “do you have this in medium” two hundred times a week.

10. HyperDM (per conversation)

HyperDM, described the same way as everyone else. The unit is a conversation: one customer engaging one campaign, an automation, a flow or an open chat with the AI, however many messages it takes. It stays one conversation while replies keep flowing; after five quiet days, or in a new month, a returning customer counts again. Never per message, never per contact, never per follower. Free is 50 conversations a month on one Instagram channel with no card and a “Powered by HyperDM” badge on replies. Starter is $39 a month, or $33 on annual, for 500 conversations; Growth is $119, or $99 annual, for 2,000; Pro is $299, or $249 annual, for 6,000; Agency is $599, or $499 annual, for up to ten client workspaces sharing a pool of 12,000. Past a paid plan's allowance it is a flat $0.05 per conversation, with an email before you cross the line. Full detail is on the pricing page.

What the unit buys: an AI agent you brief in plain English that answers from your actual catalog, inventory and policies and hands off to you when it should, plus a full visual flow builder for the paths you want deterministic (comment, keyword and story-reply triggers, conditions, delays, data capture and tagging) with an AI step you can drop into any flow. Comment-to-DM, keyword replies, follow gates and Shopify are included on every tier rather than metered separately. The honest limits: Instagram is the only live channel, so WhatsApp or TikTok automation is not on offer at any price, and the 50-conversation free ceiling is real. If the agent is answering from a Shopify catalog, its answers are only as good as your product data, and a guide to product feed optimization covers the cleanup that makes catalog-grounded replies accurate.

The ten tools side by side

Every price is monthly, in the currency the vendor lists, from its pricing page on 2 September 2026. Read the unit column first; it says more about which is the best Instagram auto DM tool for you than the price column does.

Which billing unit fits your account

Match the unit to the shape of your traffic and the job the DM has to do.

  • Big audience, simple job (send a link): per DM or flat fee. LinkDM, CreatorFlow and InstantDM charge for what the automation actually sends, and a viral week costs you nothing extra on a flat plan.
  • Steady audience, deep tooling: per contact. ManyChat's tiers are predictable when your monthly reach is predictable; read the overage rate before the headline price.
  • High-value, low-volume DMs (coaching, services): per AI message. SetSmart and FlowGent's credit tiers price the reply, which is fine when each reply is worth a lot.
  • The DM has to sell or support from real product data: per conversation. A conversation is the unit that matches a store's actual workload, and it does not grow with follower count.

Whatever captures the lead, the next step is usually email. The tier logic in a comparison of email automation tools by free plan and sequence features transfers directly, even though it was written for authors: the free tiers cap subscribers, the paid tiers cap sends, and the unit decides the bill in exactly the same way. Run the cost calculator with your own numbers before you commit to any of the units above.

Picking the best Instagram auto DM tool for your bill

The best Instagram auto DM tool is the one whose billing unit matches how your account actually behaves, and the feature list comes second. Creators with reach and a simple link to deliver are overpaying on a per-contact plan; stores whose DMs do real selling are underserved by a per-DM link tool. Instagram's own free replies cover more than most people expect and cost nothing to try first. If your DMs need to answer from a real catalog and you would rather pay for conversations than for contacts, start on HyperDM's free plan with your own products connected and see what the agent says to your hardest questions before spending anything.

Run the automations. Let the AI close.

Comment-to-DM, keyword replies, follow gates — set up in minutes, then the AI answers from your real catalog. Free on one channel, 50 conversations a month, no card.

FAQ

Common questions

On price alone, Instagram's own automated replies and Meta Business Suite's comment-to-message are free, and CreatorFlow's free tier includes 500 automated DMs a month with comment-to-DM. Among paid tools, InstantDM's $9.99 flat plan is the lowest listed price on this page. Cheapest depends on the unit, though: a free per-contact plan with 25 contacts runs out faster than 500 DMs.
Yes, when it runs on Meta's official Instagram messaging API, which every tool on this list does. What is not allowed is automation that sends unsolicited messages, mass-follows or acts like a human account through the app itself; those tools are the ones that trigger “automated behavior” warnings. Official-API tools reply to people who messaged or commented first and respect Meta's reply windows.
As of 2 September 2026, ManyChat's pricing page lists AI features as included on Pro ($39 a month, or $29 annual), Business and Advanced, and not on Free or Essential. The extra cost most people notice is the per-contact overage beyond each tier's allowance, from $0.10 per additional contact on Essential down to $0.004 on Advanced.
Per-contact billing counts each person who touched your automation in a month, once, no matter how little happened. Per-conversation billing counts one customer engaging one campaign, however many messages it takes. The practical difference shows up when a post goes viral: thousands of new contacts raise a per-contact bill immediately, while a per-conversation bill only rises with the conversations that actually happen.
Not automatically; no tool imports another's flows. What transfers is your account, your posts and your audience, so the practical approach is to rebuild the two or three automations that do most of the work, run both tools briefly on different posts, then turn the old one off. Contact lists and tags usually need exporting by hand where the old tool allows it.
